Joe DeNova Columbus High School vs Henry Carlson Vestavia Hills 130lbs Consolation Match Round of 16 Super 32 2008

Georgia Archives Match of the Week #9

This match was a winner moves on bout between two studs from the South at the 2008 Super 32 Tournament, with Georgia’s own Joe DeNova coming out with a 3-2 victory. It came down to the last few seconds with a great flurry put together by DeNova using his Greco specialization perfectly to get the needed escape. Henry Carlson was an absolute beast in his own right. Carlson was a 4x Alabama/Virginia State Champion, NHSCA National Champion, Beast of the East All-American, and the 13th Ranked wrestler in the country. He would go on to wrestle at NC State in college.

Joe DeNova is more than likely the best Greco-Roman Wrestler to ever come out of the state of Georgia. That’s not where he started his career however. He started wrestling at a very young age in Washington, before moving to Georgia in Middle School where he become a 2x Schoolboy National Champion. In high school Joey would wrestle for two years at Columbus County High School and his final two years at Harris County High School. He was a 4x 3A/4A State Placer, never placing lower than 3rd. He finished his high school career as a 2x 3A/4A State Champion, a Junior Nationals All-American, 3x Fargo All-American, and Junior Greco-Roman National Champion. Joey would continue his career at Northern Michigan University where he would have a very successful senior level career in Greco-Roman. He was a FILA Greco-Roman National Champion, University Nationals Greco-Roman Runner-Up, Senior Nationals All-American, and was one of Georgia’s only USA Olympic Team Qualifiers ever. Since finishing his competitive career he has been a great help to the growth of young Georgia wrestlers throughout the state as a coach and clinician at various different wrestling clubs, often going back and running camps at his stomping grounds with his brother Tyler. They currently run DeNova Brothers Wrestling which is a great organization that runs camps throughout the state, he also is the National Account Manager at Precision Consumer Products Group, LLC. Joey is a great guy and is one of the most genuine people you can meet, highly recommended if you are ever looking for a helping hand in wrestling.
