Georgia Archives Match of the Week #12

Let’s start off with a little background for this all-time premiere GA vs GA matchup. Chip Ness was a Junior undefeated 2x State Champ ranked #13 in the country (See Archives Match #1 to see Chips full illustrious career details) going up against Brooks Climmons who was a Senior 2x State Finalist and ranked anywhere from #1-4 depending on the media outlet. This was one of the most highly anticipated bouts in the history of the state, the matchup was able to happen at Kyle Maynard Duals in 2012. This would go down as Chip's only regular season loss in his entire High School Career.

Climmons was a youth superstar mainly competing for TWC under Arturo Holmes where he won 7 Youth State titles. He graduated from Pope High School as part of the Class of 2013, where he was a 3x State finalist for the Greyhounds.  As a freshman, Climmons would fall in the State Finals as a Freshman to another one of Georgia’s all-time greats, Joel Smith of Collins Hill and later Arizona State.  He would win the 160 lbs State Championship as a sophomore, and then he won the State Championship at 182 lbs again as a Senior.

Climmons was a 2x All-American at the NHSCA Tournament in Virginia Beach.  As a junior he finished 8th at 170 lbs.  He won the 2013 NHSCA Senior National Title by defeating Jared Haught of West Virginia in the finals by a 3-2 margin.  In 2009, he earned his first of four All-American awards in Fargo by placing 4th in Cadet Greco.  In 2010 he would become a double Cadet All-American by finishing 3rd in Greco.  In Freestyle he would knock off Dominic Abounader of Ohio and Alex Meyer of Iowa, before winning by fall over Tyler Coates of Washington to win the Cadet National Championship. He returned to Fargo in 2012 and advanced to the finals in Junior Freestyle and finished 2nd to Jordan Rogers of Washington.  He also advanced to the Finals of the Super 32 tournament in 2011 at 195 lbs, where he fell 2-1 in OT to Matt McCutcheon of Pennsylvania.

He was ranked as the #4 senior at 182 lbs by USA Wrestling Magazine and the #30 overall recruit by D1 College Wrestling.  AWN had him ranked #1 in the country at 182 lbs and Intermat had him ranked 3rd.  Climmons initially committed to Air Force, but after spending a year at the Olympic Training Center, he ended up wrestling for Oklahoma as a Freshman. Climmons would complete his Freshman year finishing 4th at the Big 12’s at 184lbs.  He would then transfer to Old Dominion for his sophomore season after a coaching change at Oklahoma, where he finished up that season with a 12-7 record. Brooks would make a final move back to GA at Brewton-Parker due to family issues, where he would finish his College Career placing 6th and finishing as an NAIA All-American.

Since wrestling, Brooks has gone on to finish his Masters Program in teaching and is currently the Head Wrestling Coach at Calvary Day High School. Climmons is a Math Teacher as well, while also being a huge asset to Team Georgia Wrestling helping to develop some of the best in the State.
